TAIU-Pacific Ocean Area
This was the unit
responsible for work on the never-ending succession of Pacific Islands
captured by US forces. So far as is known, this Unit never flew any
Japanese aircraft on its own account.
Tha TAIU-POA's main claim to fame was the recovery of
the first 'Zeke 52' and the first 'Kate" to be captured. These
achievements took place with the capture of the Aslito airfield on Saipan,
one of the Mariana Islands, on 18 June 1944.
These aircraft were shipped to the USA aboard the
escort carrier USS Copahee, which left the Garapan anchorage off Saipan on
8 July, and unloaded its cargo of fourteen Japanese aircraft and
thirty-seven engines at NAS North Island, San Diego, on 28 July. The
aircraft were thirteen 'Zekes', in various states of disrepair, and
the'Kate'. The aircraft were then taken to NAS Anacostia, where a
number were restored to flying condition by the TAIC.
